Is consumer sentiment starting to recover?

In Q1 2025 consumer sentiment has recovered to 74.5. Over the long term it now looks that Q3 and Q4 2024 were both slight anomalies, affected by short term political factors, but that the ongoing trend is steadily upward... whether that trend continues into Q2 and beyond is a different question.

  • The Index of Consumer Sentiment has risen 4.0 points to 74.5

  • Consumer sentiment rose in the USA, but less sharply than in the UK

  • UK consumers have higher sentiment in Q1 than US consumers

  • Longer term, EU consumer sentiment seems to be flat while UK and US sentiment trends up

  • 25-34 year olds have by far the highest sentiment score

  • Consumers over 45 are much more pessimistic than younger people, and their sentiment is on a declining trend
