The Essential Guide to The Lens of the Customer
To understand what matters most to customers, you first have to see the world through their lens, not your own. Qualitative insight is the tool that makes that possible.
This guide is for anyone who wants to understand customers more deeply: what drives their decisions, what shapes their experience, and what they really mean when they tell you something. It’s drawn from our Essentials webinar presented by Stephen Hampshire, and covers why qualitative insight matters, what it actually is, how to do it well, and how to turn it into something useful.

What's Inside?
Qualitative research is one of the most powerful tools in customer insight, and one of the most misunderstood. Most organisations treat it as a warm-up act for a survey, or as a way to validate decisions already made. We think that badly undersells what it can do, and often leads to research that costs a great deal and changes very little.
This guide will show you how to gather qualitative insights that will help shift your perspective to see through the eyes of your customers and empower your organisation to deliver meaningful experiences.

Why qualitative research matters
We know what customers do. Their complaints, their browsing, their purchases. What we often don’t know is why. Qualitative insight is the tool that closes that gap, revealing the attitudes, expectations and context that drive the behaviours we can observe.
What qualitative research is (and isn’t)
If you look for definitions of qualitative research, you’ll usually find something like this. Qual has small samples, uses open questions, happens face to face, and can be used to validate decisions. Like many definitions based on description these can sometimes be true, but they’re leading you down the wrong path.
Key methods & skills
Fieldwork, tools and the craft of qualitative inquiry. Qualitative research comes down to two things: observing what customers do and asking them why they do it. The skill is in how you combine those two things - and how you listen to what customers are really telling you.
Interpretation & reporting
Interpretation is the most important and most neglected part of qualitative research. Qual data without interpretation is just soundbites. The researcher’s job is not to transmit what customers say, it’s to understand what it means.
